Matching a Caregiver's Personality, Not Just Their Skills
A caregiver can be skilled, reliable and kind and still be the wrong fit for your parent. Sometimes the missing piece is personality.
Quiet caregivers, talkative clients
Niran Gunaratnam, co-owner of Mint Home Care, points out that some of the agency's most skilled caregivers are not big talkers. English may be their second language, or they may simply be shy. They are excellent at cooking, laundry and keeping a house running.
That caregiver is a great match for many clients. Mint will not send them to a family whose main goal is keeping a talkative mother engaged in conversation. For that home, Mint sends someone who loves to talk, go for walks and keep her off the couch and away from the TV.
What to share about who your parent is
When you call an agency, describe your parent as a person, not just a list of tasks:
- Do they light up in conversation, or prefer quiet company?
- What do they love talking about?
- Do they want to get out of the house, or stay in?
- What would a good day look like for them?
Your answers help the agency choose someone your parent will actually enjoy spending time with. That matters even more when a parent is lonely; see what loneliness does to an aging body.

The best match covers both: a caregiver who can do the work your parent needs and who fits the way your parent likes to spend the day. When you get both, families often find their parent looking forward to the caregiver's visits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should personality matter when choosing a caregiver?
Yes. A skilled caregiver who is quiet may suit one client perfectly and be the wrong fit for a parent who wants conversation and outings. Good agencies match on personality as well as care needs.
What should I tell an agency about my parent?
Describe your parent as a person: whether they enjoy conversation, what they like to talk about, whether they want to get out, and what a good day looks like for them.
