Visiting Nurse & Community Care

Visiting Nurse & Community Care (VNCC) is a nonprofit, community-based visiting nurse association in Arlington, and one of the few independent visiting nurse associations remaining in Massachusetts. It was formed in 2017 from the merger of Greater Medford Visiting Nurse Association and Visiting Nurse and Community Health, organizations that had provided home health care for more than a century; the Medford VNA began in 1900. VNCC is certified by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to accept Medicare and Medicaid and serves Arlington, Bedford, Belmont, Billerica, Burlington, Cambridge, Everett, Lexington, Lynnfield, Malden, Medford, Melrose, North Reading, Reading, Revere, Saugus, Somerville, Stoneham, Tewksbury, Wakefield, Waltham, Wilmington, Winchester and Woburn. Services include skilled nursing, rehabilitation therapy, home care aides and social work, with specialty programs for movement disorders, disease management and the transition to hospice; hospice care for people who are terminally ill; and Additional Care, its private personal care division, for personal care, homemaking, Alzheimer's and dementia care, respite, transportation and medical escort. VNCC works with Medicare, Medicaid, managed care and private insurance as well as private pay, and Additional Care may be funded by long-term care insurance or the VA.

VNCC took care of both my husband & my sister after joint replacement surgery. They could not rave enough about their physical therapists, Patricia & Denise! Service was outstanding!!

VNCC provided incredible compassionate loving care for my elderly father for almost 4 years. I can't thank them enough.

Having located themselves on or adjacent to Beth Israel Lahey Health Primary Care, they should continue as in years past to -- but indications are of their instead omitting to -- provide professional medical escort services. The chief scheduler had implied to me that they might no longer be doing so, and then the key person in the financial area -- whom I had in vain attempted all along to contact first and for the time being exclusively -- claimed to be able to make it happen. Their arguable disagreement, actually, was very much a side issue; I did not need or expect or welcome or find helpful the input of the chief scheduler, who for the most part simply went off on tangents corresponding to the scope of her job description and was evidently not open to learning about my actual intentions and needs and desires. (The clinical coordinator had directed me to the alias, unusable for potential or even actual clients, for the scheduling team; different actions led to my thus hearing from the chief scheduler.) But the financial specialist's subsequent words proved once and for all that it could not happen. My recent exchanges with the coordinator and chief scheduler and financial specialist were just the last straw tip of the iceberg, following lesser annoyance from a few years ago that I have wound up understanding differently. In the past couple of days, the financial specialist stated that fixed estimates are not provided, and she led me to understand that for that matter estimates are no longer provided at all. She informed me as well that once she invoiced me on the basis of the driver's timesheet, no adjustment would be possible. And she quantified for me the substantial increases compared to my last usage in the rates of both types: hourly and also mileage. (With the evidently abandoned standard rates from back then, my cost would have been a little over 30% more than what it was back then.) For a brief moment, somehow this specific news about mileage didn't trouble me, but then I remembered the following aspect -- deeply troubling at the time -- as though it had happened yesterday: Judging from my last aide's route (including a left turn, against my explicit immediately previous right-turn instructions, away from my home when at end of trip approaching my home from less than a block away) and the traffic conditions associated with her chosen route (indeed in both directions), that last aide of mine (again, from a few years ago) may have been padding, perhaps even one of several to be doing so. That could motivate an agency to wind up ending a long-standing practice of providing fixed estimates. See in this image how -- in my case -- it all ended. Upper management would appear to be potentially facing quite a daunting and previously unrecognized task, something that will not affect me personally in any event. Reinforced in truth is the improbability of their preparedness to assist at least me in any way possible in the event of its being so desired: CEO evidently rested their case after having replied to my rather hastily uploaded first draft, as is surely evident from even a casual comparison of their reply with my words.
